Test Demand Before You Commit to a Business Idea

3 October 20264 min readFor aspiring and early stage

An idea can be appealing without solving a problem someone will pay to address. Before building a product, opening premises or buying a large software stack, identify who experiences the problem, how they handle it now and what a better outcome is worth to them. This applies to a consulting service as much as a technology venture.

    Write a testable problem statement

Use this structure: a specific customer struggles with a specific task in a specific situation, causing a consequence. Keep your proposed solution out of the first sentence. For an illustrative bookkeeping service, the problem might be that an owner cannot see upcoming cash commitments—not that the owner needs your new dashboard.

    Ask about behaviour, not compliments

    • Ask when the problem last happened and what the customer did.
    • Find out who decides, who pays and what approvals are needed.
    • Explore existing alternatives, including doing nothing.
    • Record actual words and examples with permission; separate your interpretation from what was said.

Choose the smallest honest demand test

Try a clearly described pilot offer, an enquiry page or an invitation to a paid discovery session where appropriate. Explain what is and is not available. Do not describe an interest form as a sale or take payment for a delivery you cannot provide. Interviews reveal context; a concrete next action provides different evidence. Neither is proof that a market is large enough.

Decide how you will interpret the result

    1. 1State the assumption you are testing and the customer group.
    2. 2Define an observable action and a review date before running the test.
    3. 3Track how people reached the test as well as their response.
    4. 4Review refusals and non-responses alongside positive reactions.
    5. 5Choose whether to continue, change the offer or stop, documenting why.

A small or unrepresentative sample cannot establish market-wide demand. Treat the result as a reason to run the next proportionate test, not as a guarantee. Founder Connect and entry founder support are places to discuss the problem; you do not need an AI course to begin.
